of University of Michigan-Dearborn
The University of Michigan-Dearborn is a unique university with a fascinating history. Established in 1959 as a result of a collaboration between the Ford Motor Company and the University of Michigan, the University of Michigan-Dearborn has come a long way since its inception. From its humble beginnings as an extension of the University of Michigan, to its growth and development as a premier research university, UM-Dearborn has seen its share of major milestones that have helped
shape it into what it is today.
In 1959, the Ford Motor Company and the University of Michigan began collaborating to create the Dearborn Center, which was the predecessor to the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The Ford Motor Company donated 800 acres of land and $6.5 million dollars in funding to create the campus. The university opened with just a few students and five faculty members, offering classes in mathematics, English, engineering, science, business and economics. Over time, the university grew and expanded its course offerings, eventually becoming a full-fledged campus.
In the early 1970's, UM-Dearborn experienced major enrollment growth, which spurred the need for further expansion. To accommodate the increasing student population, the university changed its name from Dearborn Center of the University of Michigan to University of Michigan-Dearborn in 1971. The College of Arts, Science, and Letters was also established during this time, providing students with more opportunities to explore their interests and gain more specialized education. Athletics at UM-Dearborn also experienced major growth in the 1970's with the construction of a new gymnasium and addition of a full-time coach in 1976. By the end of the decade, enrollment had more than tripled and UM-Dearborn was well on its way to becoming the successful institution it is today.
In 1980, University of Michigan-Dearborn officially separated from the Ann Arbor campus and was designated as a separate campus. In 1987, the Henry Ford Estate, Fair Lane, was donated to the university and became part of the UM-Dearborn campus. In 1998, the College of Education, Health, and Human Services was established and several new degree programs were created in this college.

In 2003, the University Center was opened on campus and it now serves as the hub for student activities and events.
